Travel Tips
Money
Mozambique’s official currency is the Metical (plural Meticais). If you want to use a foreign currency instead of Meticais when souvenir shopping at markets and craft shops then we’d recommend that you bring small denomination notes.
It is advisable to always carry some cash on you for street vendors and because ATMs can be far between
Tips Culture
A 10% tip for service in most Mozambique restaurants is standard. Tipping is at your discretion and depends on the size of your group and the level of service you feel you’ve received.
Throughout Maputo, you will encounter parking “help” who will want to help you with parking your car and watching over it while you are away, for a small fee of 5-10 meticals.
Panhandling and begging is also prominent in the city. We recommend that you decide how much you are willing to give, if anything, before these encounters. This will make it much easier on you and the other, and they will accept a clear no.
Hope to see you there!
